It is quality protein maize (QPM) variety containing two essential amino acids: Lysine and Tryptophane. It has good drought tolerance.

Longe 8H is one of most popular hybrid released by NARO and EASEED solely responsible for production and marketing of this hybrid in Uganda It is a full season white medium maturing widely adoptable mid altitude variety. Due to its excellent husk coverage, ear head rotting can be minimized in case the cob catches in rain. It’s tolerant to drought, poor soils and ear rots, resistant to foliar diseases. Good disease resistance to maize streak virus, Torcicum blight and Gray leaf spot. Being a hybrid, it responds very well to application of external fertilizer. Application of 50 kg/acre DAPS at planting and top dressing or at knee height applies 50 kg/acre Urea or 90 kg/acre CAN. It matures in about 120-125 days with an yield of 8 -10 MT and the farmers are happy about the performance of this hybrid. This is the most promising hybrid in Ugandan market.

There are five varieties currently available Pese 1, Pese 2, Seremi1, Seremi 2 and Seremi 3.They were released between 1989 and 1999. Maturity period is 100 days and yields range between 2-3 tons per ha. All the improved millet varieties are resistant to blast but susceptible to longing. They can be used for food and making local brew.
